Remote Working Relief

Worked from home? Claim tax back on 30% of your electricity, heating and broadband for the days you worked there. Here's the formula, with examples.

How it works

Take your yearly electricity, heating and broadband bills. Multiply by the number of days you worked from home, divided by 365. Take away any working-from-home allowance your employer paid you. You can claim 30% of what's left.

It's taken off your taxable income, so it's worth 20% or 40% depending on your tax rate.

Example

Bills of €3,000 a year, shared equally with one housemate: your share is €1,500. You worked 140 days at home, so €1,500 × 140 ÷ 365 = €575. 30% of that is €173. At the 20% rate you get €35 back; at 40%, €69. Small but real, and you can go back four years.

The small print

  • Only days you actually worked from home count, not days off
  • Shared bills are split by what each person actually paid
  • If your employer paid the tax-free allowance (up to €3.20 a day), take it off first
  • No minimum amount

How to claim

Past years: myAccount → PAYE Services → Review your tax for the previous 4 years → year → Complete your Income Tax Return → Tax Credits & Reliefs → Your job → Remote Working Relief.

This year: upload bills to the Receipts tracker as you go.
